This robust chair is in remarkably original condition for its age. It is made with an elm seat, ash legs, stretchers and back spindles and with arms of sycamore. It has much of its original top coats of green paint over a light blue base coat still intact. The strength of this chair lies in the skills and techniques which the maker used in its manufacture, including providing a large thick elm seat which is lightened in its appearance using a deep lower edge chamfer which visually reduces its thickness. The back spindles and legs are equally strong, being made from sections of ash, cleft to give the whole length of the grain and then skilfully shaped with a draw-knife to a round profile. The long back spindles are fitted in a characteristically Welsh way to create tension forces which act as a way of securing them: this is achieved by slightly bending the spindles in towards the centre and with the two outer ones bent backwards and inwards to create a forwards pressure. This highly effective method of Windsor chair construction is unique to Wales and is particularly noticeable in examples made in Breconshire.
