Lot Essay

The first mortar has some similarities to Scottish squat early mortars; see Finlay, Michael, Some British Medieval Copper-Alloy Mortars, Journal of the Antique Metalware Society, vol 10, June 2002, p.22.et seq. See also lot 485 from The Robert Spalding Collection of Mortars, November 12th 2003.
