Lot Essay

The profile of the carved legs on this table is distinctive.
A table with closely similar legs is in The Board Room, The Abbot's Hospital, Guildford, Surrey; it is documented that this was given in 1709 by a local man, Robert Berry, who became Master of the Hospital. It is not unreasonable to surmise a Surrey origin or workshop for that table and thus possibly for this distinctive type of leg.
Another table with very similar legs and frieze (and with it's draw leaves ) was sold as part of 'The Contents of Littlecote House', Sotheby's, November 20th-22nd 1985, lot 401
