Lot Essay

Popularly known as the guardian of children, Jizo is always depicted in the robes of a monk. He carries a shakujo with which ringing sound, insects and small animals can be made aware of his coming. This sculpture is of the construction known as the ichiboku sukuri [one piece wood sculpture], in which the figure is carved from a single piece of wood.
