A PAIR OF LACQUER SCREENS
Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Each screen of two hinged panels, the black lacquer ground decorated in iroe hiramaki-e, togidashi-e, kinpun, mura-nashiji and inlaid in ivory and mother of pearl, the first, with two panels above two smaller panels, pierced with shippo design, the fronts of the main panels decorated with groups of passers-by sheltering from a squall of rain under the overhanging eaves of two Tokugawa family temple buildings and a a group of three blind masseurs under an umbrella, the reverse with egrets among reeds; the second screen similarly decorated with travellers and karako at various pursuits, the reverse with egrets among reeds, copper-gilt fittings engraved with karakusa
