Lot Essay

Emmeline (Emily) Pankhurst (1858-1928) was one of the most militant of suffragettes, and with her daughter Christabel Pankhurst (1882-1960) formed the non-party Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in Manchester. In their protest for votes for women, the motto became 'Deeds not Words'.
