VIZAGAPATAM, CIRCA 1850
One side stained green, the kings and queens carved with pierced galleries, the bishops with pierced flaming mitres, knights as horses' heads, the rooks as turrets surmounted by flags, pawns with foliate baluster knops
The king -- 4 5/8in. (11.7cm.) high; the pawn -- 2¼in. (5.8cm.) high
A Vizgapatam ivory and horn veneered sandalwood folding chess board, circa 1850, the engraved borders decorated with seated figures with stylised birds, admist trailing foliate and building -- 18 1/8in. (46cm.) wide
