Lot Essay

Eughne Dubois discovered the 'Java Man' in Indonesia in 1891, naming it Pithecanthropus erectus. The modern species name - Homo erectus - was initially proposed by Ernst Mayr in order to unify the classification of Asian fossils. James Howard McGregor, an American biologist and artist, modelled the original bust between 1914-1919 and this can be seen in the American Museum of Natural History.
