An early 19th-Century French pressed burr maple snuff box,
the cover entitled CRANOLOGIE DU DOCTEUR GALL and depicting three phrenology skulls divided into sections and numbered, the underside entitled SYSTEME DES ORGANES CEREBREAUX DU DOCTEUR GALL and listing twenty-seven emotions relating to each section of the skull as depicted on the cover, with tortoiseshell lining -- 8cm. (3 1/8in.) diameter

Lot Essay

Pinto illustrates a similar snuff box, plate 365, item B, page 347. The present example contains a typed note Snuff box from either Shaw or Henderson family. Dr Theodore Gall, of Antwerp and Paris, Phrenologist flourished about A.D. 1798-1813.
