An 18th-Century French brass Butterfield-type compass sundial,
signed Lasnier AParis, with bird-shaped folding gnomon pointer, adjustable over 40-60°, the horizontal plate with hour scales for 40°, 45°, 49° and a fourth unmarked, the glazed compass with blued-iron needle and the underside engraved with latitudes for eighteen continental cities and towns, in an octagonal fitted red plush-lined fishskin-covered wooden case with silver push-button catch -- 8.5cm. (3 3/8in.) wide
