A rare mid 18th-Century lead sundial plate,
signed in a date puzzle HOC HORIZONTALE EX SCVLPLSIT ER ER[..]XIT ERLIGIOSVS FR: RAPHEL PLAN[..]C[..]M[] CONVENTVALIS [..]XV[], indicating 1760, the plate with terminated corners, curved hour scale and zodiac scales up the sides, lines radiating from the top centre marked with various locations around the globe, a cartouche at the bottom bearing the date puzzle and entitled Soli Deo Gloria with symbols and names for the houses of the Zodiac, a hole for the gnomon and four further holes, possibly for mounting an armillary sundial above -- 47.4 x 39.1cm. (18 5/8 x 15 3/8in.)

A sundial plate of similar design, also signed by Fr: Raphael with a similar date puzzle, was offered in these rooms on 30 June 2004. That example had a large armilliary sundial mounted over it, which suggests a possible function for the four mounting holes found on the present example.
