A ROYAL CHRISTENING PRESENT:- AN EARLY VICTORIAN SILVER-GILT CUP & COVER,
MARK OF JOHN MORTIMER & JOHN SAMUEL HUNT, LONDON, 1840,
Of part-fluted vase form with bifurcated scroll handles hung with pendent bell-flowers, (one handle with part detached but present), the waisted neck applied with floral swags, the body with broad matted frieze decorated in high relief with children & playful putti, the lower body applied with foliage, on pedestal foot decorated with repetitive flower-heads & winged cherub masks, the cover similarly decorated below a fluted pedestal surmounted by a finial of an angel with attendant putto, engraved with Queen Victoria's crowned cypher & inscribed "To VICTOR ALEXANDER ERNEST MARSHALL from his Godmother VICTORIA R. Dec.13, 1841", the cover inscribed around rim "Published as the Act directs by Mortimer & Hunt, 156 New Bond Street, London, Jany.1, 1841, 15 in. high (38 cm.), 62.25 oz.
