A RARE GEORGE III SILVER PRESENTATION PLAQUE FOR EXTINGUISHING A FIRE,
MARK OF PHIPPS & ROBINSON, LONDON, CIRCA 1786,
Shield-shaped with 3 chains dependent from a finger ring, engraved with an angel blowing a horn beside inscription "Success to Brodies Manufactory", the centre engraved with monogram "RL" in large script letters (for Rolls Liberty) between three rolled-up legal scrolls, inscribed below "The Gift of the Rolls Liberty Inhabitants for extinguishing the fire on 24th. June.1786.in Symonds Inn", the whole within a border of laurel, the reverse inscribed "John Purkis, Samuel Osman, Overseers 1786", part-marked only with makers' mark, lion passant & king's head, 10 in. long to top of chain, (25.5 cm.), 4¾ in. wide (12 cm.), 4.25 oz.

Rolls Liberty, or to use it's preferred name, Liberty of the Rolls, was a parish or extra parochial place in the Holborn division of the Ossultone hundred, 1/2 a mile west of St. Paul's, London. This enclave was situated between Chancery Lane & Fetter Lane & contained the Rolls Court with chapel. This was initially a place where records (rolls) were kept.
