Further details
Internecine struggles within the Maratha confederacy led to the battle of Poona in which the nominal overlord of the Maratha chieftains, Peshwa Baji Rao II, was defeated by the Holkar ruler of Indore in October 1802. The former fled to seek British protection and signed the treaty of Bassein with the Honourable East India Company, ceding territory to the British as part of the treaty. This in turn led to the 2nd. Anglo-Maratha War of 1803/05. British forces under General Arthur Wellesley came up against the army of the Rajah of Berar under Scindia of Gwalior at the battle of Argaum (Argaon) where 3 of Wellesley's battalions, hitherto reliable, broke & fled. However the future Duke of Wellington was able to rally his forces and finally won the day, defeating the Marathas with the loss of all their guns & baggage, the British sustaining losses of 346 killed & wounded.
The Army List gives a Lt. J. Donald in the 94th. Foot (The Scotch Brigade) who were present at the battle of Argaum.
