Of book form, the cover engraved with The Crystal Palace within a zig-zag engraved navette panel framed within a similarly decorated border with bud motifs in each corner, the spine inscribed "CRYSTAL PALACE" between two decorative bands, the base engraved with a large foliate device within a zig-zag & foliate frame, gilt interior, 6½ x 3 x 1 5/8 in. (16.5 x 8 x 4.4 cm.), 13.5 oz.

The Great Exhibition of 1851 was conceived by Prince Albert, consort to Queen Victoria, with the intention of symbolising the industrial, economic & military superiority of Great Britain. It was held in Hyde Park, London & housed in the specially constructed Crystal Palace, designed by Sir Joseph Paxton. It was visited by 6,200,000 visitors who marvelled at the 13,000 exhibits gathered from all around the world.
