Lot Essay

The sitter, Lady Rhoda Birley was the wife of the society portrait painter Sir Oswald Birley (1880-1952). They married in 1921 and lived in Hampstead and Charleston Manor, East Sussex, the contents of which were sold by Christies, 3rd October 1980.
