St. Francis de Paola was the founder of the reformed Franciscan order of the Minimes. He was born in Paola in Calabria on the road between Naples and Reggio, and was a hermit by the age of 15. In 1436 he founded the Minimes under the motto Peace and love to all mankind, and pledged to keep Lent all year round. Called to France by Louis XI, he was detained upon the King's death. However, this was only temporary, as legend has it that when he was refused passage over the strait of Reggio, he his spread his mantle and flew across.
