Lot Essay

Sir William Stephenson, known to many by his wartime intelligence codename of Intrepid, was the senior representative of British intelligence for the entire western hemisphere during World War II and was an inspiration for the character of James Bond. Amongst his numerous military decorations, he was the first non-American to receive the Presidential Medal for Merit, America's highest civilian award.
