Walter Elmer Schofield was born in Philadelphia and completed his initial training in Pennsylvania at Swarthmore College and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Like many of his contemporaries Schofield also studied abroad spending three years in Paris. Later he went to England, where he eventually settled in the St. Ives art colony in Cornwall. Schofield's impressionist landscapes are best known for their atmospheric lighting and bright colors. He often completed his canvases in one sitting. This focused approach lends the paintings great immediacy. In Summer Shadows two quintessential aspects of Schofield's work are highlighted, his thick brushwork and dramatic cobalt blue sky.
