Lot Essay

Mytens painted his portrait of Mary Stuart after the Sheffield type, of which three versions are known. His painting is distinct, however, as he reversed the composition so that the head now faces slightly to the right, instead of to the left. The most likely painter of the original is now believed to be Rowland Lockey.
