Lot Essay

Born Catherine Raftor, daughter of an Irish soldier, Kitty married George Clive, a barrister. They soon separated and Kitty went on to become a famous comic actor in David Garrick's company at Drury Lane Theatre. She also sang in performances for Handel, with whom she was friends. After 22 years of performing she retired to Strawberry Hill, where Horace Walpole provided her with a house, now known as Little Strawberry Hill.
