Lot Essay

The present work is datable to circa 1730, and it is therefore unlikely that the traditional identification of the sitter as Esther Turpin is correct; Esther Turpin is recorded as the daughter of John Turpin and married John Fellowes in 1776. The present portrait is likely to depict an earlier member of the Turpin family.
