Henry John Boddington was the second son of the artist Edward Williams and brother of Sidney Richard Percy, amongst others. His marriage, in 1832, inspired him to adopt his wife's maiden name as a means of distinguishing himself from his family and other artists of the same name. Boddington was one of the most charismatic and popular members of the Royal Society of British Artists. He was known for his large and technically accomplished landscapes, and his ability to construct compositions. He often positioned the light source just off canvas, as in the present view, so that the foreground greenery is backlit with sunlight.
This scene can be identified as the Afon Glaslyn, in Snowdonia.
