Each with a caned back and seat, the turned uprights and legs decorated with gadroons, with light blue floral patterned loose cushions, one with a printed label 'Blue Bedroom', with traces of an earlier layer of white and parcel-gilt decoration

Lot Essay

Related white-japanned chairs, with Grecian-scrolled and caned tablet rails, were amongst the furniture that is likely to have been supplied for Mere, Cheshire in the first decade of the 19th century; while such chairs were also a speciality of the London firm of John Gee (see Christie'’s house sale, Mere Hall, 23 May 1994, lot 1177; C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, pp. 217-222).
