Lot Essay

Thanks to the natural properties of the stone, marble caskets provided the perfect environment for storing tobacco and as such, were extensively used for this purpose in 18th Century. An 18th Century casket of similar size and shape is illustrated in P. Verlet, Les Meubles Français du XVIII Siècle, Paris, 1982, plate 9.
