Lot Essay

Jean Arsandaux, maître horloger in 1727.
This cartel clock illustrates the transition between the rococo of the Louis XV style and the neo-classical of the Louis XVI style. The present lot highlights the appearance of symmetry in the neo-classical fashion, which gives this clock a more ordered design.
Closely related clocks were sold Drouot, Paris, 7 March 1994, lot 73 and Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 11 April 2005, lot 56.
