Lot Essay

The Parisien cabinet-maker Adam Weisweiler (1744-1820) worked for the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre who supplied large quantities of furniture to London. The inspiration of this pair of jardinieres may well be derived from Weisweiler's design for a 'gueridon, illustrated in P. Lemonnier, Weisweiler, Paris, 1983, page 90.
The design of its rosewood bowls is similar to a Regency rosewood, parcel-gilt and gilt-metal-mounted jardiniere, circa 1815, sold in the Michael Lipitch sale, Sotheby's, London, 22 May 1998, lot 141.
