Lot Essay

These impressive giltwood fauteuils are inspired by the oeuvre of the foremost French menuisiers of the late 18th century; especially Georges Jacob (1739-1814), Jean-Baptiste Sené (1747-1803) and Jean-Baptiste Boulard (1725-1789). The rails and feet in their entirety display a very delicate carving featuring neo-classical ornaments: acanthus, symmetrical floral garlands, stylized leaves etc.
These ornaments can be found on an important set delivered in 1787 by Georges Jacob for the Salon des Jeux of the château de Saint-Cloud. A fauteuil from the suite is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le mobilier français du XVIIIe siécle, Paris, 1998, p. 417.
