Lot Essay

The caned chairs, japanned in imitation of Chinese lacquer, have vase splats and cabriole-scrolled truss feet in the 1720s fashion. Amongst the leading firms manufacturing such furniture in the early 20th century was that of Salamon Hille (Victoria and Albert Museum Exhibition, Hille: 75 years of British Furniture, 1981).
