Lot Essay

With the contrast between its sober shape and its beautiful metal marquetry, this bookcase is a perfect example of the pieces created in the late 17th and early 18th century. As only a few pieces were stamped at that time, it is always difficult to identify their makers, however, the present lot relates to the oeuvre of Nicolas Sageot.
Sageot founded his workshop around 1690 and after a very successful career he retired in 1720. According to its invoices, the armoires were the most expensive items, costing from 400 to 1,000 livres (P. Grand, 'Le Mobilier Boulle et les ateliers de l'Epoque', L'estampille - L'objet d'art, February 1993).
