Lot Essay

This elegant commode was executed by the celebrated Brussels cabinet maker Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864). The stamp CHAPUIS which appears on the present lot had previously been attributed to the French cabinet maker Claude Chapuis but the discovery of this stamp used as a signature on a legal document attests that this stamp is the one of his Belgian counterpart (see D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le mobilier français du XIXe siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 118). Among his numerous commissions, Jean-Joseph Chapuis supplied a wide variety of pieces to the Château de Laeken from 1806 onwards.
