En 1838, Ferdinand Barbedienne devint fondeur et s'associa avec Achille Collas (mort en 1859) qui inventa une méthode de reproduction en réduction des sculptures antiques et modernes. A partir des années 1850, la société dès lors connue sous le nom de Barbedienne, remporta de nombreuses médailles aux expositions universelles. A la mort de Ferdinand en 1892, son neveu reprit l'affaire.
