COS D'ESTOURNEL

Château Cos D'Estournel in the commune of Saint Estèphe is a highly regarded second growth often praised as the finest wine in its commune. Cos is situated at the most southern part of Saint Estèphe, separated from its Pauillac neighbor, Château Lafite, by a stream known as La Jalle de Breuil.

The word "Cos" in the old Gascon language means "The Hill of Pebbles" and the Château is situated at a height of more than 60 feet above the Gironde requiring the roots of the vines to penetrate quite a distance to reach the water reserves in the aquifer. Cos vines are quite densely planted at 8,000 to 10,000 per hectare and the average age of the vines is 35 years, yet only those over 20 years of age are used in the Grand Vin.

The wine is traditionally quite tannic when young but evolves into a richly textured wine with tremendous complexity and beautiful aromatics. In great vintages Cos will be extremely long-lived.

"When Bruno Prats first took over the direction of this Château,
the old Maître de Chai used to say to him every vintage "Cos stands for Couleure, Odeur, Saveur." All these elements are on full display in this classic vintage: the colour is an impressive, purple-red, the odour combines blackcurrant with cedary spiciness, and the palate has complex savours of great richness with a round and long-lasting aftertaste. A.H."
