Lot Essay

The composition is a melange of motifs and variations taken from the School of boys and the School of girls, resp. in the Louvre, Paris and in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen (see R. Pallucchini, Pittura veneziana del Seicento, Milan, 1993, II, figs. 977-8).
We are grateful to Mr. Ugo Ruggeri for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph (written communication, 16 February 2006). He suggests that it dates from de' Rossi's early period in Venice.
