Between 1934 and 1947, he painted many portraits and still lifes. This realistic style evolved to magic realism. He was inspired by 16th and 17th century art, but also his contemporaries such as Raoul Hynckes and Dick Ket. The still lifes from this period refer often to the Second World War. It has been suggested that there could also be a hidden religious symbolism behind these works, because of Ponsioen's preference for depicting wine jars and often a white cloth. Ponsioen never spoke of any hidden meanings in his work. From 1947 on he made more and more portraits, using the alla prima technique. The people depicted are mostly citizens of Tiel, the city Ponsioen lived in. The present collection shows some fine examples of these portraits as well as still lifes.
