The chair's trellis-fretted and quatrefoil-pierced back relates to a 'Gothick' pattern in R. Manwaring's The Chair-maker's Friend, 1765 (pl.13). An example of very similar design to the present lot, with tapering legs and square block feet, from the collection of the Earl of Mansfield at Scone Palace, is illustrated in A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, pl. 137
