Lot Essay

The fret-carved decoration and ogee bracket foot are inspired by a design for a Commode Clothes Press by Chippendale, dated 1753, Oliver Bracket, Thomas Chippendale, London, 1925, p. 195.
A group of related blind-fret carved tallboys exists, all featuring the boldly gadrooned foot, including one in the collection of Percival Griffiths, illustrated in Ralph Edwards, The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1964. Another example, with a classical pediment, was exhibited by Clifford Wright Antiques at the Grosvenor House fair in 1996.
