John Henning the Elder (b.1771-d.1851), came to London in 1811, and was overwhelmed with admiration of the Elgin marbles, which were to become a source of great influence for him. Working for Josiah Wedgwood at the time, Henning embarked on a project of making models of the Parthenon and Phigaleian friezes, restoring the missing elements, an undertaking which he felt was not only useful for his own artistic gain, but also for pecuniary reasons. It took him twelve years to complete the reliefs, of which a number of small plaster copies were also made. He also executed large friezes based on them for the exterior of the Athanaeum Club in 1830.
