The design of this cellarette relates to a group of wine coolers of consistent form including an example, attributed to Samuel Norman, c.1760, probably commissioned by Sir Lawrence Dundas for Aske Hall, Yorkshire. All feature various combinations of satyr, goat, lion and Bacchic mounts, and the common feature of foliate wrapped hoof feet. The lid, formed as a giant patera, is a design frequently associated with Gillows.
