MING DYNASTY, LATE 15TH-EARLY 16TH CENTURY
The body carved and pierced with a wide band decorated with figural scenes, including a figure on horseback approaching an attendant and a sage or immortal asleep in a mountain grotto within a mountainous landscape, as well as two scholars or immortals seated either side of a censer while one plays the qin, betweeen a band of petal lappets below and a band of peony scroll above, with a narrow band of petals and detached clouds on the neck, all in blue, turquoise, yellow, white and aubergine, the interior glazed green

A fahua jar with very similar subsidiary borders, but with a main band of the Eight Immortals around the sides, is illustrated by E. Gorer and J. F. Blacker, Chinese Porcelains and Hard Stones, vol. II, London, 1911, pl. 195.
