Hollow molded, probably a screen tile, one side decorated with scholars admiring a painting in a garden setting, the reverse with birds amidst prunus branches, all within diaper borders, each of the unglazed narrow sides cut with a rectangular aperture for attachment

Lot Essay

The decoration on the present plaque is similar to a rectangular screen tile with comparable rectangular apertures on each edge, dated to the early 18th century, included in the exhibition catalogue, Eastern Ceramics and Other Works of Art from the Collection of Gerald Reitlinger, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 18 July - 13 September 1981, p. 52, no. 110.
