As often happens, Chiesa's collection started almost by chance and began by gathering as many pieces as possible, in no strict order, following only his aesthetic instinct. Eventually, an amateur interest was replaced by expertise, and his initial desire to build a large collection gave way to the passion to build a prestigious one. The process of collecting has not been easy but has lead to an intellectual adventure involving extensive research and study. The theme that pervades this fascinating collection derives from Chiesa's Italian heritage and the aspiration to rival large international collections. Prospective purchasers are advised that several countries prohibit the importation of property containing materials from endangered species, including but not limited to coral, ivory and tortoiseshell. Accordingly, prospective purchasers should familiarise themselves with relevant customs regulations prior to bidding if they intend to import any lot which contains an element of an endangered species.
