Lot Essay

For a similar and comparable set see The Kaspar Stock Collection of Chess Sets, Christie's South Kensington, 27 May 2004, lot 13, and
for futher discussion see Michael Mark, Antique Indian Chess Sets, published Forderkrei Schach- Geschichstsforschung e..v, 1997, page 36. Mark states that these sets are "often referred to as 'Burmese', while sets to a similar design but with heads above the central ball of ivory, are often referred to as being from Macao. However both variants are from Canton, for the European market and probably from the same workshops as straight forward Chinese sets".
