Lot Essay

Jessie McNab Dennis illustrates a carved hardwood example, see CHESS: A SELECTION FROM THE GUSTAVUS A. PFEIFFER COLLECTION, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1968, fig. 84. Note is taken of the tallest piece, the knight, with reference to the origins of the game and to the Western influence carved decoration along the horse's back. For a similar carved ivory 19th century set see Fine Chess Sets & Memorabilia, Freeman's chess exhibition, 25 May 2002, fig.9, page 24.
