Lot Essay

John Calvert's was a Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners (1819), and leading chess maker of his day. The firm operated from 1790 and continued until 1840, after Calvert's death in 1825. For similar sets, stamped Calvert 189 Fleet Street, see Bloomsbury Auctions, April 2005, lot 132.
