Lot Essay

Michael Mark discusses the evolution of French playing sets from the last quarter of the 18th century using the lathe. Named after the city, the 'Lyons' chess sets are usually stained on one side and black on the opposing, decorated with either bone or ivory trimmings. See British Chess Sets 1700-1950, Exhibition catalogue, published by Asprey and Chess Collectors International, May 1986.
