One side stained brown, the other natural, the kings and queens with stiff-leaf finials, the bishops with mitres, the rooks as turrets, all with lower pierced galleries, the knights as horses' heads
The king -- 5¼in. (13.5cm.) high; the pawn -- 2¾in. (7cm.) high

The term 'Spanish Pulpit' has evolved to described this type of set, the origins of which remain a mystery, although its now thought that these sets are British. Recent research by Alan Dewey indicates some examples were carved by Bertram Jones (see footnote for lot 38). See Michael Mark, Chessmen Practical and Ornamental, 1986, Apsrey plc, fig. 34.
