Lot Essay

The set was originally designed by John Bell, for Minton, displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851. The factory re-issued the set in 1951 for the Commonwealth Exhibition. A comparable set was sold in these Rooms, September 1995, lot 187, also unmarked but in white and celadon hues. It was noted that all the sets produced for the Commonwealth Exhibition were marked, however, however it was suggested that a number of sets were possibly produced without marks, for private use by the Minton factory.
