A Pair of gilt copper repousse figures of two Taras
Nepal, 18th century
Each very finely worked seated in lalitasana in mirror image and with one hand raised in vitarka mudra, each holding lotus stalks rising up to flank their shoulders, clad in a flowing diaphanous dhoti secured with a jeweled belt, adorned with multiple necklaces, bracelets, armlets and a billowing sash wrapped around the shoulders and arms, their faces with graceful features, acquiline nose and gentle smile, the hair pulled into a topknot and secured with an elaborate jeweled headdress, backed by foliate mandorlas, richly gilt overall and inset with hardstones

Lot Essay

These repousse figures, worked from sheet copper and assembled in sections, gilt and richly inset with hardstones, represent the pinnacle of the repousse technique from an artistic and technical point of view.
Compare with a related pair in the Museo Nazionale d'Arte Orientale, Rome, though less finely executed and lacking most of the adornments, in D. Mazzeo, Splendori dell'Asia, 2005, cat. nos. 34 and 35.
