The front pommel, skirts, and back cantle decorated with gilt iron damascened fittings decorated with writhing dragons and pairs of tigers and cranes amidst foliate arabesques centered by Garuda, very finely worked and pierced on a silver damascened ground

Lot Essay

The construction of the high pommel and cantle with the wide skirts allow a more even distribution of weight along the back of the horse; for other examples of this design see D. LaRocca, Warriors of the Himalayas, 2006, cat. no. 112 and 124.
